OBITUARY
An Qpptiki message records the death of Mr. James Backhouse, aged 8$ years. Deceased was born at Lake Windermere, Lancashire, England, and bad. quite an eventful life since coming, to New Zealand 61 years ago. Commencing work in Gisborne, he stayed here far two or three years. He then took up land at Otara, OpotiUi, which he disposed of to visit' England in 1892. Later, he proceeded to California and. engaged; in fruit farming, but . was unfortunate, in that shortly after, he left, there oil was struck on the property he gave, pp. Returning to New Zealand, he took up, land in the Waiawa block at Opdtikj which ho held for 10 years. He then left for America, returning again to New' Zealand in 1923. Later he. paid another visit to England, which he left, for Australia, where he stayed tor two years, finally settling in Opotiki five years ago. Deceased was. unmarried: andhad no relations in the Dominion.
