SATURDAY’S FOOTBALL MATCH In a game that was postponed from the previous Saturday, Waima (Tokomaru) wero defeated by the local Tawhiti team on Saturday by 6 points to nil. Each team had two wins to its credit in the annual competition of the Tokomaru sub-union and the resulting clash was hard fought and was witnessed by a fair number of spectators. Tawhiti felt the absence of two men at the commencement of the game and Waima pressed very hard, tho early part of the play being mostly in Tawhiti’s twentylive, but later, with their full strength, Tawhiti more than held their own. They obtained the ball from scrummages in the majority of cases which gave their backs plenty of opportunities. T: Taingahue and Api Pipi botli displayed excellent football in their respective five-eights and centre positions, and Tawhiti’s initial three points were won by a nice back movement, P. Maraki crossing the line near the corner flag. Tho angle to convert the try was difficult and the attempt, failed. Forward work was good on both sides, each team packing well in the tight, and when the occasion arose, showed plenty of dash in following up and dribbling, the Tawhiti pack perhaps being more prominent in this respect. J. Newton, as full back, played a sterling game for Waima. Tawhiti obtained their other three points in the second half by a penalty goal kicked by Taingahue. Mr. M. Forrester was a capable referee and the game demanded much work from him as infringements appeared numerous from either team. The weather and turf were ideal for the game and Tokomaru selectors witnessed the match with the view to choosing the Tokomaru representative team to play at Wai-o-mata-tini next Saturday. F. Tibbie, A. Allan, S’. Mcllroy, forwards, T. Taingahue, John Mcllroy, and A. Pipi, backs, wero chosen from the Tawhiti team.
