ECHO OF FRAUD

“GOLD FOR NOTES’’ DISPOSAL OF MONEY (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. An echo of the “gold for notes” fraud recently perpetrated on Thomas Whyte, when on his way Home for a trip to Scotland, was heard in tho Police Court to-day, when the magistrate had to determine tho ownership of £27 odd found in the possession of the two men who have since been sentenced. One lawyer appeared for Whyte and another for himself, having secured a signed order from the men before ho defended them. Both prisoners gave evidence. They denied that the money was the proceeds of the fraud, and both said they had been wrongly convicted. They were questioned by counsel and the magistrate until the latter ordered Capner to stand down, and said he did not believe a word he said. After hearing legal argument from both lawyers, Mr. Hunt said : “1 am going to make an order that this money he handed to Whyte. These two men (the prisoners) are nothing hut a pair of thieves.”
