WOOL RESEARCH
NEED FOR IMPROVEMENT GROWERS’ CONFERENCE (Special to the Herald.) WELLINGTON, this clay. Woolgrowers’ representatives conferred at Parliament Building yesterday on the question of promoting a- general scheme lor wool improvement. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. UW. Forbes, was interviewed by the gathering, which was attended by the Hon. C. E. Macmillan, Minister of Agriculture. No definite developments were available for publication when the proceed- “* ings closed. However, this conference indicates that the Government is .- anxious to revive the proposal submitted to the Parliamentary Select Committee last session for research into wool problems. The Prime Minister, as head of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, placed a comprehensive statement before the House on the subject of wool improvement. This was referred to the Agricultural and Pastoral Committee, which took evidence, reporting towards the encr of the session that before any legislation was enacted to enforce any particular scheme of wool improvement a poll should be taken of .those interested in wool production. It was mentioned t»y Mr. H. S. S. Kyle, chairman of the committee, that the opinions it had heard were very divergent. The Prime Minister’s view was that New Zealand must produce wool suitable to its customers’ requirementsjyand that he had been inforjned in Brjtaford that New Zealand wool had deteriorated to such an extent that it was not so suitable as formerly for Bradford manufacturers’ purposes. Mr. Forbes added that he had informed the sheepowners that if they were unanimous in submitting a scheme the Government would legislate and the committee’s report could be considered at a subsequent session.
