THE GRAND NATIONAL FAMOUS AINTREE COURSE Over world-famed Aiutree, the Grand National Steeplechase' at Liverpool will be decided once again next Friday. For many years this blue-ribbon event of cross-country racing has attracted [ world-wide interest, and developments : which have Dublin as their centre have 1 certainly neither decreased nor limited the extent of that interest. The course is so severe that periodi--1 callv an outcry of cruelty is raised. The fact that horses —like Graklc and Grcgalach for instance —have competed in a number of Nationals suggests that it is not too great a- task for a properly trained stayer. The course is over four miles and 856 ' yards, and the jumps include some parti- ! culurly dreaded obstacles, j A few years ago the race became too popular. There was a field of sixty-six in 1929 and it was realised that there was a danger of the event becoming a . farce. Horses that had no right to he ’ included in a National field hampered the really eligible candidates. Only nine of that sixty-six. completed the course, and the number of horses stopped or brought down by riderless rivals was large. Oomlilions were then imposed making it necessary for a horse to be elfcdively qualified before lie was eligible for nomination;. | Some years have been particularly bad for mishaps. In 1921 35 started and only one came home. A similar result obtained in 1911, when 26 started. Only two of 22 reached the. judge, safely in 1913. and 39 out of 44 failed to finish in 1930. With a sweepstakes attached, the value of the race naturally varies from year to year. It was worth £13,000 in 1929 and £11,255 in 1928, but those are the only occasions on which the five-figure mark has been attained.
