MAKARAKA DAHLIA SHOW
A BRILLIANT DISPLAY OPENED THIS AFTERNOON The annual dahlia display and sale of work -in connection with the Church oi England at Uakauika was opened m the iMakaraka-Matawhero Ball this afternoon, and will conclude to-night. Mr Heath Johnston has the main display,* whiles Mr. Alex Thomson also has a- stand, find these two are a feature of the ffimetioh, forming one of the most brilliant and attractive efforts seen in the hall at Makaraka. The blooms arc of a particularly large size and of. fine deep color, being displayed without blench- . . „ .. , . . Also, a competitive flower section lent interest to the function, the six adult and two childrens classes being well filled. Competition was keen, and so difficult a task had the judge, Mrs. P. C. Dwyer, that in several instances ties were awarded for the various placings. Opportunity was taken to conduct . a snleTof work in conjunction with the display, and the stalls were well filled and attractively set out. The attendance ot the public early in the afternoon was not targe at any one lime, but there was a continuous stream of visitors, whije to-night a large audience is «x- - active duty during the progress of the function included: Small goods and vegetables, Mesdames Darton, Westell and Ashdown; sweets, ice cream and drinks, Misses Herbert, Spratt and Jackson; work stall, Miss H. Halliort and Mrs. Marshall • cake stall, Ales.Afmes Barrow, G. Jones, and lietjen; Tbhjtwnd, Mesdames Hodgson and Cram, afid wiss E. Jones; afternoon tea, Mesdfim# Spratt, Herbert, Saunders, Gibson, Chapman, Robinson, Misses J. Range, D. Gibson and K. Saunders; cake estimating, Mrs. C. Johnson.
