CRUISER’S DEPARTURE

THE FINAL FUNCTIONS TRIP TO TE KARAKA IMPROMPTU SPORTS HELD H.M.S. Dunedin left the roadstead today after a little more than three days here. Large numbers of her complement were ashore yesterday afternoon and last night to attend the final functions held in their honor. Leave expired at 7 o clock this morning!. , , .. The trip to Te Karaka yesterday aiternoon attracted over ICO naval men, and they were accommodated in 23 cars, a municipal bus and a service car loaned by Mr. J. Musgrave. The Automobile Association and the Publicity League controlled arrangements at Gisborne and on the iournev out, while at the other end the Te Karaka Women’s Institute supplied afternoon tea. School children, who took great interest in the visit, were greatly intrigued with the presence of so many sailors at Te Karaka. The men from the cruiser were besieged, and they responded by organising an impromptu sports meeting. There were races for the children for prizes donated by the sailors themselves, and all events were got off in the snappy fashion customary with the navy. Tugs-of-war were also staged. Te Karaka beat H.M.S. Dunedin and the marines heat the petty officers. In the meantime, in town, further visitors were being carried to and from the ship, and large numbers took advantage of the arrangements provided. Thorp was a large attendance at the floodlight sports meeting held by the amateur chib at the Childers road reserve last night, when men from the ship were among the competitors. Others attended the dance held in the Blue Room by the Poverty Bav Professional Athletic and Cycling Club. _____
