AMATEUR ATHLETICS

H.B. HERALD SHIELD NAJPIER RETAINS TROPHY MARGIN OF 19 POINTS Competing for the HaAvke’s Bay Herald Shield, on McLean Park, Napier, on Saturday afternoon, representatives of the Napier Athletic Club succeeded in retaining the trophy, beating off the challenge of the Gisborne Amateur Athletic and Harriers’ Club by a margin of 19 points. The scoring, on the aggregate points basis, was: Napier 79. Gisborne 60, tile visiting athletes giving a better all-round performance than in either ot the past two years. The home club had a big advantage in the field events, and carried off all the first placing* in this section save the discus throw, in which J. Algie, the Gisborne representative, established a new centre record with a throw of 118 ft. o|in. to win the class comfortably from E. Phillips, of the Napier dub. In the sprint races, Gisborne was supreme, filling all three places in the 100yds. and 220yds., but at middle distances Napier had things more its own way, Avhile the defeat of T. Campbell in two out ot three of the shield cycle events spelt final defeat for Gisborne’s hopes of securing tile trophy. Campbell seemed to have the third of the cycle races nicely won, Avhen C. Robson shot past him practically on the tape to win. When the final shield event of the day was run, this being the inter-club relay race, the manager, Mr. W. M. Wildish, decided against making further calls on the sprinters of the visiting party, and in consequence fielded a slightly sloAver side than he need have done; victory in this event did not affect the fate of the shield, however, as Napier then had a winning lead of points. t Details of the shield events were as under:—
