(Herald Correspondent.) A most enjoyable time was spent at the home ol’ Mr. and Mrs. Allan on Tuesday evening, when members of the Patutaiii bowling and croquet clubs forgathered to play progressive euchre, fho drawing-room was tastefully decorated with Iceland poppies and some interesting contests took place. Prizes were won by Miss I. S. Allan and Mr. M. J. Hogan. At the conclusion ol’ the games a dainty supper was dispensed. The opportunity was taken of bringing to a close an estimating competition for a handsomely dressed doll, the winner being Mr. H. H. Lurm, of Muriwai. Those present included Mr. and Mrs. J. B. appreciative audience, and all numbers were heartily applauded. At the conclusion of the concert the minister, the Rev. Mr. Spence, moved a hearty voto of thanks to both the performers and those who had so kindly placed their cars at their disposal. A full measure of credit is duo to Mrs. W. Fairley, who capably organised the function, by which the church funds will materially benefit. The following was the programme: Instrumental trio, Mr. and Mrs. Rutherford and Mfs. Fairley; songs, Miss Rimu Holmes; dance, Mr. Bobby Scott; recitations, Miss Phyllis Mortimer; songs, Mrs. Rutherford; dance, Miss Colleen Perston; recitations, Miss Muriel Mortimer; songs, Mr. Claude Edwards; dance, Miss Sheila Munvo; violin solos, Mr. Rutherford; songs, Mrs. Widdowson; cello solos, Mrs. Rutherford. Accompaniments were rendered by Mrs. Fairley, music for the dances being provided by Mrs. Esquilant. The monthly meeting of the Patntahi Town Board was held on Wednesday evening. Present: Messrs. G. V. Smith, chairman, A. Doherty, J. H. Smith, W. Stubbings, and 0. Tliodey. The ranger’s report showed that a satisfactory number of trips had been made round the roads during the month, a considerable number of unattended animals having been impounded. Correspondence) was received from tho Transport Department regarding tho allocation of heavy traffic fees, and from the Main Highways Board suggesting that roadmen he kept on duty during the holiday season owing to the increased volume of traffic on the roads. Tho board decided to discontinue its subscription towards the Municipal Association, the advice of the board’s solicitors being regarded as sufficient in this direction. The following tenders were received for supplying 1500 cub. yards of gravel from tho river to the town district roads and 100 cub. yards to the board’s dump: Mr. H, It. Cann, 5s 14. cl per yard to the roads and Is per yard to the dump; Messrs. A. and C. Judd, 2s per yard to roads and Is lOd per yard to the dump. The tender of Messrs. A. and C. Judd was accepted. Out of four applications for the position of tallyman in connection with the gravelling contract, Mr. R. Eade was appointed. It was resolved that letters of condolence be sent to Mr. and Mrs. W. Bryson and Mr. C. Matthews in their recent bereavements.

Shearing gangs have been working at full pressure throughout tho district during the past few weeks getting clips away to the forthcoming Napier sales. Something in the nature of a record for a two-stand plant was recently accomplished at Mr. S. I). Brant’s “Burnside” shed, when a team comprising Messrs. R. Hillman, IT. Atkins, K. Rum and D. Kelliher put through a tally of 692 for one day’s shearing. The shearers worked alternately, taking two-hour spells.
