A young German, Paul Kaolmel, was convicted at the Central Court of the theft, of the Emden bell, and was remanded for sentence. The police evidence stated that Kaolmel said: “It you had searched the Mariposa a few days after it was stolen you would have found the bell.” The bell was taken from the Emden after her encounter with the Sydney. It was placed on Garden Island. In August, 1932, it disappeared, but some time later it was found buried in the Domaid.

It was then placed in the Wat Memorial Aluseum. It w r as bolted to a pedestal in the naval section. Last April, the museum authorities were amazed to find that it was missing. For more than a week, the detectives endeavored to locate the man. but they missed him on each occasion, often by minutes. Last week the suspect was seen seated in Hyde Park, and the detectives quietly surrounded him.
