MEETING OF COUNCIL The fortnightly meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor, Mr John Jackson, presiding. There were present also Crs. IT. E. Maude, G. Bradley Smith, 11. Holmes, J. 11. Hall, I). S. Thompson, W. J. Mac Gibbon, and W. Cave.

The Railways Department forwarded for seal and signature the lease for a portion of the railway reserve, Waikanae Beach.—lt was resolved that the previous lease should be formally surrendered, and that the new lease should be submitted to the Waikanae Beach Improvement Society for its approval. The Tuning;) Church of England Committee wrote intimating that it was 'proposed to hold a shop day during the Christinas week to augment the fund to further the work of the church amongst the Maori people of the Gisborne district, and asked t*iat permission for this purpose should be granted at a reduced rate. —It was resolved to reply stating that the council had no power to make any concession. REPORTS | ENGINEER’S DEPARTMENT The engineer, Mr. E. It. Thomas, reported inter alia : “Roads. —Stafford street, Ormond road to Whitaker street: Hot-mix paving was commenced on November 20 and finished on November 25; area paved 2288 square yards. Gladstone road, south side, Cobden street to Roebuck road: Hot-mix paving was coipmenced on November 27, but was interrupted by rain. Work was resumed on Tuesday. Concrete kerb and channel, Palmerston road:The construction of a concrete channel between Carnarvon and Disraeli streets is in progress. I' “Robinson Memorial tower.—The construction of this tower is proceeding satisfactorily, the contractor having now completed the foundation, steps, and one 3ft. lift in the column. 1 “Unemployment relief works.-- During I lie fortnight employment has hern provider! for 230 men per week. The main works comprised : Vegetable gardens at Botanical Gardens and .An/.ae Park, load ing lorries, various jobs at borough yard, levelling sanitary depot, suspension bridge across Tarulieru River, and clearing slips at Tamnata Hill reservoir.” ■ Reporting in connection with the waterworks, the engineer stated that the, highest gauge reading during the fortnight ended November 27 was 1101 b. and the lowest 451 b. There bad been one leak in the main line during that ncriod; at To Pura bridge, Wningakn. The quantity of water that passed through the meter at the head works for the weeks ended November 20 and 27 was 7.3C0.000 and 7,860.000 gallons respectively. The four towers to carry the main line over the Tnruhcru River* at Hylton road had been placed in position, together with the placing of the anchor blocks. The wire cable had come to band, and would lie erected as soon iis the concrete foundations wore sufficiently seasoned. The construction of the overhead suspension gear was in hand. WORKS COMMITTEE , The works committee reported inter alia.: “A list of contemplated works for the fortnight .was submitted by the engineer, the principal works being hot-mix paving, Tamnata Bill reservoir, and the water main across the Tarulieru River. The committee recommends that a road stud be placed at the intersection of Stafford street and Ormond road in order to regulate the traflice to tile, correct side of the road when turning at this intersection.

“The committee considered the application from the Gisborne Fire Board for the piping of a portion of the drain adjacent to its premises, Bright street, but in view of the expense involved and the fact that the proposed work would not be of general benefit, the committee recommends that it be not undertaken.

Society waited upon the committee, in connection with the proposed erection of Blanket rooms on the council’s property, Palmerston road After some discussion, it was decided to recommend that the Women’s National Reserve be granted a site for its proposed rest rooms adjacent to the Peel street bridge, western side, and the Piunket Society a site adjoining the one allotted to the National Reserve. Approval of the plan of the proposed Piunket. rooms submitted hv the society is also recommended. “In order to minimise the risk to persons using the Maiigapapa bridge, Ormond road, the committee recommend Hiat the ironwork on the top of the bridge he painted white.” OTHER REPORTS Inter alia, the report of the finance committee stated that an application had been received for the right to conduct a refreshment stall at the Macrae Bath, but as the site proposed was considered impracticable, tbe committee recommended that tbe applicant should be allowed to confer with the engineer before the application was further considered. Tbe waterworks committee s report stated that consideration had been given to the request of the Gisborne Refrigerating Company for the installation of a 6in."water main in lieu of the present 4in. main leading to the company’s works, it being contended by the. company that the present main was inadequate for fire-fighting purposes. The committee bad decided, befoie making any recommendation, that the superintendent of the, five brigade should be asked for a report. In its report the inspection committee stated that it considered that the type of trallic dome installed at the intersection of Hylton and Childers roads was a source of’danger to traffic, owing to its height, and recommended that instead a cinie of six metal studs should he used, ff fbis system were found to be satisfactory it could be adopted at all intersections where traffic domes were required. The reports were adopted.
