WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

W AIM AT A VALLE Y MEETING On Thursday, November 23, the members of the VVaiinata Valley Women’s Institute held their last meeting before Christmas. The attendance was good, and Mrs. J, C. Mazengarb presided. It was decided to hold an institute dance on Saturday, December 2, in order to raise funds for the proposed picnic. A beautiful Christmas cake made ay Mrs. Mazengarb and iced in the institutecolors of blue and yellow by Mrs. .McCarthy, is to be competed for and the winner announced at the dance.

There were some amusing and completely unrecognisable “first photographs” which were arranged as a competition, and caused much hilarity.

During the afternoon tea, which was served by Mesdames Monck and Quinn and Misses Newman and P. Jones, everyone took part in a proverb guessing competition, which was won by Mrs. G. I\. Barber.

Mrs. Ravage gave a demonstration on ■‘smocking’’ and its various forms and use 3.

The roll-call for the day was a sewing list, and some ingenious suggestions were exchanged. The results of the competitions were:—Best Christmas gift: Mrs. McCarthy, 1; Miss P. Jones, 2. Homemade soap: Mrs. J. C. Mazengarb, 1 : Mrs. Quinn, 2. The president, Mrs. Mazengarb, closen the meeting and wished the members a very happy Christinas and New \ car.
