MOUNTAIN GOLF LINKS
SUCCESS AT RUAPEHU Tl 10 dillicull t;tsk of laying down a golf course at Buapehu, in front of the Ohateau Tongariro, has now been successfully accomplished. Four years ago the hist attempt was made to form a golf links on the mountain plateau at a height of 3750 ft. above sea level, but the first endeavor to establish a sole of grass failed badly owing to the high altitude and the acid volcanic soil, with its lack of humus and phosphates. After the first expensive failure many experiments were carried out and it was found that heavy rolling, coupled with the use of phosphates and bush loam soil, overcame some of the original difficulties. Chewings fescue seed from the South Island, brown top seed, originally grown on the.mountain slopes of Norwal, and good strains of white clover gradu-, ally formed a satisfactory mat of grass, and to-day the greens and fairways provide ample proof of the success of the experiments.
