A raid of over f>o houses in the Grafton district was made early yesterday morning by thieves who stole clothing from clothes lines ami small change from milk cans near back doors. Nearly £2 was stolen in
pennies and threepenny pieces, while the thieves were not above taking a pound of butter, or a pot of cream left by early milkmen. Indignant householders were surprised to find notes from the milkmen pointing out that the money had been forgotten. Others blamed the milkmen for overlooking messages left requesting extra milk, cream, or butter, and many families commenced the day with a stern resolve to change their dairymen.
More serious losses occurred in number of houses, where bathing suits, shirts, .underwear, stockings, and handkerchiefs were missing from lines in back yards. In some instances, the householders were not aware of their losses until the police, who recovered a quantity of the stolen property after the arrest of two youths, made practically a
house-to-house canvass of the district, inquiring if anything had been stolen. Inquiries made by the police resulted in an exceptional number of Grafton residents visiting the police station during the day to attempt to identify their belongings from a miscellaneous assortment, of clothing recovered in the morning. By 9 o’clock last evening almost everything had been claimed*
