THE GENERAL ROUND
WORK ON THE HARBOR MAINTENANCE PRINCIPALLY Maintenance work about the harbor absorbed the attention of the port staff during the greater part of the past month, it was intimated to the Harbor Board to-day by the secretary-manager, Mr. 11. A. Barton, whoso report was as under;
“Grab dredge.—The grab dredge was employed 14 full days in the lower channel, four days in the upper channel and two days in the Waikanae basin. No dredging was done on November 16, when the services of the crew were required to assist the shore gang in clearing the track across the rocks for tho dray conveying gas -cylinders to the Tualiine lighthouse. “Permanent staff works. —Tho works upon which tho foreman and liis men have been engaged include chipping and painting No. 3 barge, which was finished on October 27; cleaning and oiling railway points and repairing point boxes; assisting the harbormaster’s staff on soundings; repairing fenders, walings, lieadstocks, etc., of the Kaiti wharf (this work now being completed along a length of 200 ft. below the corner); preparing gangways expected to be required for use of 11.M.5. Laburnum; ■painting tho roof, fences, etc., of the board’s office ; assisting the Napier Harbor Board engineer in making inspection of the Korua, Pelican and the barges; plugging holes in the diversion wall; chipping and painting the Thermax boiler; cleaning and painting tide gauges ; changing gas cylinders at the leading light; clearing access over rock surface approach to the Tuahine light (the foreman and all hands were so engaged for half a day) ; setting up new saw bench and fitting circular saw on new bearings; repairing gas cylinder cases; assisting on Takitimu during visit of H.M.S. Laburnum; repairing decking of fishermen’s wharf; blasting concrete block at outer end of the diversion wall fthis fob has been completed to tho extent directed by the works committee) ; assisting engineer engaged by the board to report upon the condition of the Korua; transporting buoy from Waikanae island and delivery to Niven and Company for repairs; repairing sheathing of western groyne; constructing handrailing at fishermen's wharf and -preparing posts and wires for barricade at waterside workers’ landing for the safety of the public when visitors are being transported to H.M.S. Diomede: chipping and painting iron work of the breakwater light tower; and sundry usual maintenance jobs. “Belief workers.—Relief workers have been engaged clearing around the steam shovel on the Waikanae island and along Kaiti and Read’s quay, also handling timber and r™" '' '’"ions jobs.”
