RELIEF MEASURES
BOARD CRITICISED TARANAKI CONFERENCE (Per Press Association.) ELTIIAM, this day. The unemployment problem was discussed at length at a provincial conference of Taranaki Mayors this morning, when a series of resolutions uns adopted. The conference affirmed that the allocation to Taranaki unemployment committees had never been adequate, and that the cut made would make (lie position unbearable. The conference also resolved to enter a protest against the policy of the board in providing a greater measure of relief for unemployed in city areas, in contrast to provincial towns and districts. The resolution asserted that country seasonal work was of a most casual nature, and could not be regarded as sufficient to maintain tho present wholesale reduction in the relief allocations. <
The board’s building subsidy scheme was briefly ericiscd, and the conference recorded its disapproval of tho diversion of unemployment, funds for building and painting schemes “which enn only be taken advantage of by those in good financial circumstances.”
