CHILLED BEEF SHIPMENTS

The question in regard to tho quality oi' the beef shipped as chilled from this Dominion was discussed at the last meeting of the New Zealand Meat Producers’'’Board, and it was decided that the board should undertake the grading of such beef so that only beef of suitable quality would be exported. In the opinion of the members, the quality of the cattle treated for this trade is a very important 'factor-in its development, and it was considered most essential that shipments of chilled beef, right from the inception, should be confined to cattle of the right type. If New Zealand is to build up a trade it. must start off with suitable cattle, and thus establish a good name for the quality of the beef. CANTERBURY CLIP

For the first time in three years speculation is taking place on the wool market. Some of the bigger fine-wool clips on stations in Canterbury and Marlborough have been bought by speculators, at prices much in advance of those ruling last veav.

This speculation is regarded by brokers as a very healthy sign, for it usually takes place in a period of improving prices. One line of half bred wool, consisting of 200 bales, has been sold to a buyer at an all-over price of 12d a pound, this figure including everything except the locks. Wool of this class sold at about.Bd a'pound at auction last season. Better lines of halfbred have been

bought for 15d in the shed, which is a limit 4d to 5d n pound better than similar wool made last season. Somo Marlborough halfbred and merino clips have been sold at 12d, and the same price has been offered for halfbred 'in North Otago.
