SETTLEMENT OF LAND
GALATEA ESTATE ERECTION OF COTTAGES Work is progressing in dividing and preparing for closer settlement the Galatea estate, Whakatauo County. The area, comprising 20,000 acres, was acquired by the Government after having been utilised privately as a sheep station for 50 years, and it is hoped to place 200 settlers on the block. The Government has called tenders for the erection of 10 cottages and the first of the sections, numbering about 20, will be opened in February or March. When opened these sections, which comprise about 100 acres each, will have been grassed and fenced. Some of them will have buildings upon them. It was stated by the Minister of Lands, the Hon. K. A. Ransom, some time ago, that it was proposed to erect buildings on half the total number of sections so that settlers could either take land with buildings or construct their own as they desired. Water is now being laid on to the 20 sections that are shortly to be opened, and further areas are being grassed for opening at a later date. About 2000 acres will be sewn in grass next autumn. Mr. Ransom stated last May that from 30 to 40 sections would be offered for settlement next year.
