EAST COAST RAILWAY
COMPLETION TO BE URGED COMMITTEE’S INVESTIGATION 4 * All indications at the present time are to the effect that a reasonable argument for the completion of the East Coast railway line will be available and will be presented- to the Government,” said the Mayor of Napier, Mr. C. O. Morse, yesterday. The investigations which have been carried out during the past few months in regard to the scheme were referred to by the Mayor, who stated that within a few days now it was expected that all the data connected with the estimated costs and revenue would have been prepared. As soon as this is ready a general mooting will be called to fully discuss the whole proposal. The inquiries which have been made
embraced a wide field of activity. At tho request of tho committee which was set up following the original conference held at Wairoa, the services of Mr. R. Trevor Smith, who was engaged on the construction of the line before the work was ceased, were granted for the purposes of computing tho outlay which would be involved in t!m completion of tho line. The investigation by Mr. Smith was completed some woeks ago, but the exhaustive inquiries regarding the estimated revenue which wpuid be obtained if tho line was completed occupied longer than was anticipated and are only now drawing towards completion. The investigations have led the mombers of the committee to consider that at least a reasonable argument will be possible in placing before the Government the desire of tho district that tho work should -be completed.
