NOTABLE VISITOR
GEN. SIR W. R. MARSHALL DISTINGUISHED SERVICE A distinguished visitor to New Zea- ■ land is Lieutenant-General Sir 'William I Raine Marshall, G.C.M.G., K.C.8., jK.C.S.I., who, with Lady Marshall, arrived at Wellington on the Rongitano j from London. The main object of their | visit is to spend the trout-fishing season J in New Zealand. r Sir William Marshall has had an outj standing military career. Born m 1365, he served on the North-Western liontier of India in 1897-98 with the Malakatid Force and the Tirah Expedition, and in the .South African War, 12C0-G2, with mounted infantry and in commanding a mobile column, being wounded twice, mentioned in dispatches twice, and coming out with the rank, of Brevet I/eiu.Colonel. In the European War, lie commanded the Sherwood Foresters in Fiance, 1914-15, the 87th Brigade of ibo 29th Division on Gallipoli, 1915, Doing piesent at the original landing and the evacuation; at Salonika, 1916, in command of the 27th Division; m .Mesopotamia, 1916-17, commanding the 3rd Indian Army Corps, and finally _ he became General Officer Commanding the Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force, 1917-18. He was G.0.C.-m-C. Southern Command after the war, retiring m 1924. He wrote an account of his experiences in “Memories of Four Fronts,” 1929. > Lady Marshall was formerly Mrs. Stephcn-Stephcn, of Edinburgh and Elgin. i They intend leaving Auckland early in May, On his way Home Sir Wil--1 liam will take the opportunity of making personal contact with a Canadian regiment, the Manitoba Ilaugers, of which lie is the honorary colonel, and which ho has not yet seen. Loth he and Lady Marshall have not previously been in New Zealand.
