RAILWAY BUILDING
LITTLE ACTIVITY SALES OF SURPLUS ASSETS (Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Government spent only E 69,603 on railway construction during the year covered by the Public Works Statement, tabled yesterday afternoon in the House of Representatives by. the Hon. J. Bitchcner, Minister of Public Works. The actual outlay in’ money was set off, however, by tpercceipt of .£ 66,858 from the sales of huts, surplus plant, and other stock which was held by the Public Works Department for the purpose of rail-’ way construction. Practically all construction work during the year was concentrated on the Stratford-Main Trunk line, and good progress was made, all tunnels being completed, bridges brought to the final coat of paint, and everything being ready for handing over the line to the Railways Department on September ltd! 3, despite the effect of a heavy Hood which silted up six miles Of the line in March last.
