MATCHES AT THE OVAL TWO SINGLE INNINGS WINS Both matches in. the Poverty Bay Pricket Association’s Thursday competition at the Oval yesterday afternoon were again decided on the first innings, R.S.A. defeating Cash Stores, and Wanderers securing a victory over Retailers. Tho latter game was won by a comfortable margin of runs, but in the match between R.S.A. and Cash Stores there was a very close finish, R.S.A. winning by only six runs. WANDERERS V. RETAILERS Due mainly to tho batting of Clements and P. Dow, Wanderers defeated Retailers by 57 runs on the first innings. Wanderers batted first, and after losing the first three wickets for 16 runs, went on to make 148 before the last wicket fell. Clements, eighth man in, ran up a score of 52, including seven fours, and P. Dow, who went in last, compiled 37 (five fours) before being bowled by Newton, who took in all six wickets for 47 runs. Retailers failed to make much of a stand against the howling of Good and Carr, the latter taking five wickets for 30, and Good five for 53. Retailers were all out for 91, Stephenson (26) being the top scorer, while Newton made 21. Before time was, Wanderers, in their second strike, had four wickets down for 88, Good scoring 49 (not out). FRIENDLY MATCH WIN FOR RETAIL TEAM A friendly match was played yesterday afternoon between teams representing wholesale and retail soft goods houses, and resulted in a win for Retailers by 83 runs, only one innings being played by each side. Retailers, who batted first, fielded three strong bats. V. Butler retiring when he had compiled 37, while 11. Bissenden carried his bat for 40 (eight fours), and Bound made 46 (eight fours). The innings closed with nine wickets down for 181. A. E. Pyatt was Wholesalers’ most useful batsman, scoring 34 before he was run out. Tho only other double-figure scorer was A. Temm, who made 21, and the innings closed for 98. W. D. Morley took five wickets for Wholesalers, and Bound three for Retailers. Details: —
