INCREASE CHECKED
DOMINION UNEMPLOYED EXPENDITURE REVIEWED (Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. There is a definite arrest in the upward swing of unemployment registrations disclosed in the annual report or' the Unemployment Board, which was presented to the House to-day. A comprehensive analysis of the ntimbers of registered unemployed at various periods leads to the conclusion that there is cause for satisfaction in the fact that the 1933 figures show a much smaller rise over 1932, compared with the increase between 1931 and 1932. Taking the June quarter figures, the 1931-32 increase was 16,800, or 37.8 per cent, as against 8320, or 13.6 per cent, for 1932-33. These figures, taken in conjunction with fluctuations jit the weekly registrations, indicate lliatAhe upward swing in the numbers experienced during the last three years is apparently arrested. In seven years, the State expenditure on unemployment relief totals £11,930,061, states the report. The cost in 1927 when local bodies carried a greater burden, was £144,240; it has now risen" to £4,097,833. Gold mining and prospecting employs 3900 men, and it is estimated that the building subsidies include work involving a wages cost of over £4.000,000.
