TE ARAROA NEWS

(Herald Correspondent.)

The mortal remans of the late Mr. Pehi Wanoa were laid to rest on his farm at Orutua, near Horoera, East Cape, on November 14. The Hev. Tunoa, nephew of the deceased, assisted by the Rev. It. T. Kohere, conducted the funeral service, which was largely attended by natives from all parts of the Coast and Cape Runaway. Mr. Belli Wanoa, after a lingering sickness*, died on Sunday, and on tlu* following two days large numbers of people arrived, showing the high esteem in which the deceased was held. He was of chiefly rank, and for many years was engaged in sheepfarming, and for the last two years was also engaged in dairying. He was 52 years of age, and leaves a widow and a family of 12, four daughters and eight sons, to mourn their loss. Eulogistic references were made by several leading men to the life of the late chief; one speaker said the late Rev. Pine Tamahori and Mr. Pehi Wanoa were of their generation the most amiable men in the Ngati-Porou tribe.
