BURIAL OP WHITE WOMAN A unique ceremony took place at Ruataluina last week, when the natives accorded ceremonial taugi honors to the first white woman, so far as is known, to die in the Urewera country.- The deceased was Mrs. _ Agnes Johnson, a sister of Sister Jessie, who this lieeu attached to the Presbyterian mission in that district arid is well known for her work among tho Maoris, As a. tribute to Mis. Johnson’s memory and a mark of respect to her family, she was buried with native, ceremonial seldom, if ever, extended to a white woman. The taugi was attended by a large gathering of natives from all parts of the district and many eloquent orations were made regarding the estimable qualities of the deceased. The grave was entirely lined with rare Maori mats aud the earth surrounding the grave-side was strewn with greenery.
