THE PUBLIC DEBT

OVER £208,000,000 RETURN TO THE HOUSE (Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. The position of the public debt of New Zealand to the end of the last financial year was placed before Parliament by " the Controller and AuditorGeneral. t The total amount outstanding is £208,209,198. The amount repaid or redeemed within the year was £922,310, f and the aggregate amount extinguished

since the commencement of the Repayment of Public Debt Act, 1925, was £8,432,603. Presenting the report of the Public Debt Commission, the chairman, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, states that of £1,336,019 transferred from the ordinary revenue account of the consolidated fund to the public debt repayment account, £922,310 was used for the discharge of public debt securities. Sufficient cash remains in the account, to redeem £63,960 worth of securities unpresented at March 31 last. In view of the possible contingencies arising out of the operation of the New Zealand Loan Conversion Act this year, a. substantial balance was carried forward to redeem the stock of dissenters to conversion.
