Mr. E. H. Jones lias received advice that entries on behalf of the Wairoa Yachting Club will ho accepted for the Cornwall Cup contest in Auckland on January 20. I The mortal remains of the late Mrs. J. Hunter Brown, late of “Here-1 taunga,” Ilutt County, were laid to rest, in the Wairoa cemetery on Friday morning, beside those of her late husband, Mr. J. H. Brown, and near to her son, Adam. The casket was brought all the way from Wellington by road and on arrival was covered ! with many beautiful wreaths, testifying to the esteem in which the deceased was held in all parts of the district. The funeral services at the church and at the graveside were conj ducted by the Veu. Archdeacon But(terficld. There was a good attendance of the older settlers, and ex-employees of the late Mr. Brown. The pallbearers were Major Blakeley, Dr. John Ross and Messrs. Wood (Napier), E. H. Glendinning, E. L. Kimbcll, of the Wairoa j Hospital staff, is on holiday in Auckland. At the first meeting of the gardening circle of the Ruakituri Women’s Institute, held at the home of Mrs. J. L. Spence, Mrs. A. W. Forsyth presided. A very interesting programme was carried out. and Mrs. Forsyth won the chief competition “Naming the Boses was won by Mrs. Burdon, Mrs. Evans being second. The competition, a soft toy for the Christmas tree, was won by Miss A. Bruce, with an elephant, Mrs. Burdon being second with a soft doll. The three best roses were won by Mrs. Evans, Mrs. Barton and Mrs. Richards coming second. A dahlia demonstration was given bv Mrs, Spence. The hostesses for the day were Mesdames S. Spence and Dillon. The games plaved on the Wairoa bowling green on Wednesday resulted : Wilson Rose Bowl.—Rachinger, V. Brown, and Moore 18 v. R. H. Thompson, Goodlev, and Clark 13. Singles Championship. Rachinger defeated Moore. Other games resulted: Pinel, Phelan, and Galbraith 26 v. Sproule, Sheehan, and A. B. Smith 24; T. Browne, Mackav, Fletcher, and Prebble 22 v. H. Christensen, England, H. Cook, and Andresen 20.

The first night meeting of the Wairoa Athletic Club for the current season resulted successfully, though the running track was far from being at its best.
