JAPAN AND ITS PEOPLE
THEIR POINT OF VIEW CLERGYMAN’S IMPRESSIONS SYDNEY, Sept, 26. “The fact that the Japanese mind works in a different way to ours explains to a certain extent the difficulty we sometimes have in apprehending their point of view,” said the Rev. S. G.jj Bacey, a retired clergyman, who returned* by the Marella, after a six months* viSitj to Japan; In many of the habits of the Japaneses Mr. Pacey noticed that they did in the opposite way to that which is customary with white people. They used wet towels instead of dry ones, they struck a match in a different direction to the one customary to White people, and instead of threading a needle they “needled the thread.’ Mr. Pacey was impressed by the patriotism shown during! the military display before the Emperor of Japan. The shops were full of toys of a military mature, and many brooches, made in the form of aeroplanes, bombs, and helmets, were worn by the enthusiastic crowds. “Their industrial organisation is greatly to be admired,” said Mr. Pacey. “In their big cities they have localised the different businesses according to their nature. The factories, the residential parts, the restaurants, and the business houses are each more or less arranged in defined localities for the facility of biijjij ness. The low cost of products 'is exemplified by the fact that a first-cla,ss[ bicycle can be purchased for 3}s.” Mr, Pacey Policed a great feeling of resentment among the Japanese because they were made to deposit £IOO on enteri* ing Australia, while people Of most other! nation? were npt‘asked to do so.
