CHESS NOTES

(By “Black Knight”) At the Gisborne Chess Club last week Meredith defeated Fischbach a second time in the handicap tournament. In the championship tournament, Venning beat Ritchie, Seddon' Wdn against Schlichting, and Thompson scored at Seddon’s expense. The result, so far, is very interesting. The secretary, Venning, has won three times and has two games to play, but they will be strenu- j, ous, for he has to meet both tho champion and the ex-champion; Seddon has won twice, lost once, and has two games to play; Ritchie and Thompson, who have not yet pluyed their game in the second round, have each lost one and won one, with three to play; Schlichting and Weatherly have yet to play their game in the third round, and both have lost two games, with three to play. The following are paired in tne fourth round, which should be played to-mor-roW: Ritchie v. Weatherly, Schlichting v. Thompson, and Venning v. Seddon. In the Waikanae Stakes, A section. Gleave mated Harris, and Whitehead conquered Meredith; Gleave and Whitehead, both so far unbeaten, should play each other to-morrow, and the victor will finally play the winner of the B section. In this latter group Fischbach beat Lawn and McMahon defeated Dunpan ; the losers, having lost twice, retire from the conflict. Fischbach is now drawn against Harris, and McMahon must play Meredith.
