MYSTERY HORSES
PETAU AND TRIVENTO DERBY AND CUP MELBOURNE, Oct. 2d. Pctau and Trivdiilo are regarded here as the mystery horses of the Melbourne 'Cup! Each is being trained by the astute d’ahios Scobie, at Fieinington, and until a fetv months ago neither was taken seriously 'by the racing public for any of the Important spring events. Now each is being discussed freely, and this morning they provided the Flenrington touts with something to enthuse about by running a mile and a quarter oa the course proper in the best ‘time registered during the operations. Pctau, a four-year-old, was a maiden until the October meeting at Flemington. He has but 7st. in the historic' two-mile race, and almost from obscurity has come with a rush to Second favoritism. Trivento, however, is the centre of admiration. He has had birt one race in public, and yet this Derby and Cup aspirant is capable of pacing it over a distance with the older horse. In fact, this morning lie appeared to be galloping mote attractively than his companion towards the finish of the trial. One of the old brigade of trainers, Scobie lias frequently surprised modern mentors by winning richly subsidised events with horses whose solid preparation has been restricted to the training tracks, and it is a coincidence that Trivalve, tho 1 sire of Trivento, had It is first, race as a three-year-old in the A.J.C. Dcfby; which he won after a gruelling battle, and then succeeded in the "Victoria Derby and the Melbourne Clip. Trivento did not. have liis opportunity to emulate those deeds, ks his trainer did not have the A.J.O. Derby as liis mission, but he has now given every indication of making gallant attempts in the Victoria Derby find the .strenuous two-mile handicap. He has not great speed early, says •Scobie, but to put the mentor’s words into racing vernacular, “He can stay for ever.’’ Scobie’s record in the spring events at Flemington is a’ rchiitrkable one. Ho has won numerous classics, while his Melbourne Cup winners are Clean Sweep in 1900, King Ingoda and Bftalli in 1922 and 1923 respectively, and’ TriValve in 1927.'
