CUP ANP STEWARDS FATE OF FAVORITES Backers did very well in the big Jticcaftoii double last November. True, Shatter, first choice for tl.ie New Zealand Cup, ran badly, but Fast Passage, the winner, was second choice, while Cadland, the Stewards’ Handicap victor, went out favorite, stated “The \Vatcher.” The New’ Zealand Cup has not proved at all a bad race for backers in recent years. Since 1914 it has, been won six times by the first choice and four’times by the second favorite. In the four successive years, 1927-30, the chief public fancy won each occasion. In the same period only five first favorites have won the Steward’s, and there have been sortie big upsets. Riccarton punters failed to see < the joke in 192$ and 1926, when Comic Song won each time. In 1925 he was twentieth favorite, and was followed home by the sixteenth fancy, Overdrawn. Twelve mbnths later Comic Song was thirteenth Choice.
