LADIES' DAY

FC&iOl • v A J L'Si'S. CROQUET CLUB OPENED G.B.C. INNOVATION MEMBERS’ LIST FILLING UP , So successful nas been the initial appeal for, piembers. of flic Gisborne Croquet ..Club, .fqrnipd in, association with the Gisborne Bowling Club, that the list has: already been closed to thoso outside the circles of the wives and relatives of bowling men. This fact was announced at the official opening of the club to-dav by Mr. Thos. Corson, in the course of a brief speech with which he welcomed the ladies to the green, and expressed ,tho pleasure of bowling enthusiasts, at having tjeon able to give facilities lor the ladies to enjoy their own game on the club's premises. The gathering on the green was a large one, and though the majority of those in attendance were novices in the game, a general desire to learn was evidenced, and almost immediately, after the official opening of the croquet green, all three courts were in occupation. The .first ball was struck by Sirs. R. Robertson, vice-president of the ladies’ club, in the absence of the president. .Mrs. T. Corson. Bowlers gathered rfliud. the ladies’ green for the oificial ’evening function, in which much interest whs .displayed. In the course of his remarks, Mr. Corson mentioned that some 20 years ago a proposal, to furnish croquet facilities for the wives of Gisborne bowlers had been discussed and dropped. The recent advent, of Mrs. McCombs in a more exalted sphere, however, had given a lead to. the. club executive in calling in the assistance of the womenfolk, and today they had convincing evidence of the success of the idea. For the meantime, the croquet players were to be accommodated on the winter green,.of the bowling club, but the adjoining section was now in conrso of preparation for their exclusive use, and it was hoped to have it ready for occupation by the. ladies by February or March. In the meantime, the bowlers would welcome the regular use of the winter green by the ladies’ club, in recognition qf what the bowling dub owed to its lady supporters. (Applause.) The presence of the. ladies would doubtless lend pith, .to the proceedings on the green, added Mr. Corson, who called upon Mrs. Robertson to start play. The vice-president’s privilege having been exercised, the courts were thrown open to-all members, those who were not prepared for croquet being invited to participate . .in a number of competitions on the bank.
