AVENUE OF TREES

APPROACH TO WAIKANAE HEADI I AREA LEVEELED KADI El TIES FOR DAMPERS liven in its unfinished state the \Yaik.uline Bench reserve presents a j niin-li altered appearance since the levelling of thi‘ additional area was j roiiniieiK'i'd, and visitors to the beach ! i-irimot fail to be impressed by the | manv improvements which have been effortod. Wiiikanao Reach always has been a very 'popular camping resort for visiting motorists, and in past seasons jits oniv disadvantage has lain in the i fact that the area available for camping sites was rather restricted for the ‘purpose. : No such disadvantage will exist in the flit u"o, however, for by taking the additional area at the rear of the I present reserve tae Wiiikanao Reach , Society has provided a camping ground I which* should be more than adequate ■ ( .vcn for greatlv increased tourist j t raffle, and at the same time will give | a much more spacious playground for the children. The additional area when it was taken over was in a very uneven state, but in tliu short space of a few weeks the land i has lieen levelled, re-fenced, planted

1 with trees, and sown down in suitable grass. A very capable gang of unemployed men, provided through the Borough Council, have been engaged, and i have done splendid work, making such I good progress that it has been found 1 possible to undertake a good deal more improvement work than was at ‘first eon--1 templated. At the commencement it, i was expected that the levelling to be j carried out during (Ins season would end at the tennis courts, but that point was . passed some time ago. and the work is being continued towards the Lowe stieet, extension.

SURFACE SOIL PRESERVED In view of the sandy nature of the land, the surface soil was carefully preserved. being skimmed oft the top. stacked on one side, and replaced after the heights had been smoothed out and the hollows filled. The result is a wide, level area with enough surface soil to take the grass. The old fence has been removed, and a new one, erected on the altered boundary, and 200 pine trees have boon planted in a double row round the additional area. These, when grown, should provide weFoiue shelter and shade for campers and visitors to the beach. Though the beach itself is one of the finest in the Dominion, Waikanae has been marred as a resort by the appearance of its approach. In future, years, however, the beach will be approached through an avenue of trees, for the present Borough Donnell, which has adopted a far-sighted policy in the matter of beautification. Ins undertaken this year Die planting of a row of trees on either side of Hiev street from Childers road

to the, beach. In the pros between the oaks and plane trees between Childers road and Kaliutia street well-grown plane trees have been planted recently, and from Kalmtia street onwards there will he an avenue of Norfolk ni"es. Already 42 healthy-looUing nines have been planted, and several move have vet to be planted to complete the double row. Tbe.se, trees are well protected against vandal Dm or damage by travelling stock by Dm movision of st.rom 1 wooden cages, constructed from material lying in the borough vard. The Waikanae Reach Society also has planted a low of Norfolk nines along the fivmtnge of its prooorty to firev ctrpot. b('l"eon the vehicle entrance and the end of the concrete promenade.
