CAUSE OF BIKTIT DECLINE SYDNEY'. Sept. 7. “The fall in the birth rate, coupled with the practical cessation of immigration, is very serious, ” said Archbishop Duhig, of Brisbane, who arrived in Sydney yesterday by air. “It has been suggested that the drop in the birth rate is due to fewer marriages, owing to unemployment,” he said, “but that would not account for much. “In my opinion, the chief cause of the decline in the uirth rate is due to the widespread knowledge and piactice of birth control that has obtained during recent years. “The open traffic in contraceptives,” the archbishop declared, “is a disgrace to Australia and one of the greatest menaces to the nation. “The inducement thus offered to married women to evade the duty of motherhood and to the single to barter their virtue is undermining standards of morality intimately connected with the honor and welfare of our connt rv. ’ ’
