MODERN AUCKLAND BLOCK ESTIMATED COST £OO.OOO At a cost of approximately £6O,(XXI. a new block to accommodate 80 beds. 40 private and 40 public, is to be erected for the Mater Misencordiae Hospital in Mountain road, Auckland. Plans have been practically completed, and it is expected that a tender will be accepted and the work commenced within two months. About one-third of the cost will represent labor, and 100 men will be employed on the building, which will take 18 months to complete. 'The work carries the Unemployment Board’s subsidy under the No. 10 scheme. The new block will be a six-storev steel-frame building with concrete floors and brick curtain walls. Its length will be, 148 ft. and the depth 92ft. It will be constructed on the most modern hospital lines, find, in addition to 40 private rooms for patients, each fitted with a bathroom, there will be five wards on the ground floor, each with eight beds, for public use. The institution, which is the largest private hospital in Auckland and the second largest in New Zealand, will lose its present character by becoming a semi-public hospital, as the Sisters of Mercy, who are in charge, will take advantage of the Hospital Amendment Act of 1930, which allows nurses to be trained in such hospitals if permission is granted by the Health Department.
