OBITUARY
MR. M. L. MacCALLUM SYDNEY, Sept. 12. The death is announced of Mr. Mungo L. MacCallum, leader writer and book reviewer for the Sydney Morning Herald, aged 49 years. His father, Sir Mungo MacCallum, is emeritus professor of modern literature at Sydney University. MRS. CHRISTINA McLEAN Mrs. Christina McLean, widow of the late Mr. A. F. McLean, who died recently at her home, “Glenroa,” Otoko, was one of the oldest residents of the district. Her kindliness of heart and charitable nature made her beloved and respected by all. Mrs. McLean was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. McIntosh, of Wellington, and was born in 1842. Owing to the unsettled state of the Wellington district during the hostilities with the Maoris, -her parents moved to Mclntosh Bay, Banks Peninsula, where her girlhood was spent.
Deceased married Mr. A. F. McLean and subsequently moved to Waimate. In 1883, with her husband and family, she came to Poverty Bay, taking up part of the virgin Otoko block, where she resided till the time pf her death. Mrs. McLean’s reminiscences of early Canterbury days were, most interesting. One of her most vivid recollections, often mentioned, was being taken by l»er parents from Bank Peninsula to Lyttelton to watch the first four ships arriving with the Canterbury pilgrims. Her husband died in 1912. Mrs. McLean leaves a family of four daughters, Mrs. .1. Hutchinson, Otoko, (Mrs. W. Shaw, Rakauroa, and the Misses M. and V. McLean, Otoko, and three sons, Mr. W. McLean, Otoko, and -Messrs. Andrew and Alex. McLean, Awakeri, Whakatane.
An old settler in the Taranaki and Auckland districts, Mr. Murdoch McKay, has died at his residence at East Tamaki. He was 91 years of age. Mr. McKay, who was born in Scotland, entered into business as a tea merchant in Glasgow. After a successful career there he left for New Zealand with his family in 1890.
