DEATH ON RUAPEHU
WELL-KNOWN ENGINEER WIFE RETURNS WITH NEWS While climbing on Mount Ruapehu on Sunday Air. J. S. L. Deem, city engineer at Wanganui, was attacked by heart seizure and died in the presence of his wife, Dr. Helen Deem, and a mutual friend, Miss Rose, of Wanganui, with whom he had been exploring the mountain. The two ladies were obliged to leave the body in the snow and make their way back to the Chateau by themselves.
Mr. Deem, who was 38 years of age, arrived from Wanganui on Saturday to spend the week-end. He left with Dr. Deem and Aliss Rose on Sunday morning on a climbing expedition, and it was while they were exploring the terrain near the base of the Whakapapa Glacier that the fatality occurred. The two women returned to the Chateau as darkness was approaching. They said the body was some distance away from the usual route up the glacier, and, as their directions were somewhat vague, and any party that went up the mountain then would have to search in the darkness, the manager, Mr. It. Cobho. decided to take a party out at 3.30 a.in. yesterday. One of the women was to go with them to 1 point cut the spot where the body was lying. Mr. Deem was an extremely keen mountaineer and knew the country well. He enjoyed a splendid physique and had not had a day’s illness in Ins life. Two years ago lie was prominent in the search for the party of students who were blizzard-hound on the mountain for several days, and was in charge of the naity that aided the first group of missing climbers through dense bush to the Tokaann road.
