ITALIAN SHIPPING
SOUTH AFRICAN SUBSIDY SURPRISE FOR BRITAIN (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Received Sept. 11, noon.) ■ LONDON, Sept. 10. Capetown reports state that the South African Government is subsidising Italian shipping for five years to the extent of £150,000 per annum to carry Union exports to eastern and western ports, and to Genoa, from which distribution to European centres will be made. The Italian Government is subsidising the companies to the extent of £300,000. The steamers are refrigerated and the services start in March. The South African subsidy to Italian shipping lines amazed British shipping circles. It is supposed that the service is associated with Africa’s increased exports of wool, sheepskins, and hides to France, and %vool, hides, skins, meat, and copper to Italy.
