RUGBY LEAGUE

i WAIROA DEMONSTRATION I' ; 1 H.B. TEAMS’ VISIT (Huralil Correspondent.) Tho llugby League code was int.ro- . duced to Wairoa sporting enthusiasts i» on Saturday, when, under the auspices . of tho Wairoa Sub-League, an off-shoot t of the Hawke’s Bay organisation sponsoring the code, two Hawke s Bay * teams visited the town to give a demon 3 stration of their game. The teams l were Clive and Taradale, two leading { clubs in the Hawke’s Bay competition, f and the match was staged at North Clyde. A large number of spectators. . | estimated at over 500, was in attendance, but the general verdict was that l ! the game was uninspiring. Little enthusiasm was roused, for in no department of the game did the visiting teams 3 give an especially attractive display. : and at no - time- was- the- exhibition 1 typical of the true League game, the passing being mediocre and the tackling palpably weak. It must bo admitted that this is the . first season for some years in which tho code has been played in Hawke s Bay, and that the teams have had very little opportunity of learning the finer points of the game. Nevertheless those who attended the demonstration expected- something a. little, better, than, what was -witnessed. Clive emerged the ' winners by 27 points to 11. Mr. B Exeter was the referee. The visiting players were later the guests of the Wairoa sub-league at 1 dinner at the, Ferry Hotel after the 1 game, when a pleasant time was spent. 1 and mutual compliments were exchanged.
