WRESTLING

OSWALD AND PATTERSON

TO-MORROW’S PRO. CONTEST Though among the last of the overseas contingent of professional wrestlers to visit New Zealand this season, the heavyweignt, Hank Oswald, has already made his mark, and Gisborne followers of the sport have been waiting _ with patience for their chance to see him in action. In view of the success of the Gisborne Wrestling Association in securing all the best of the wrestlers during the current season, it was regarded as certain that Oswald would make his appearance here before long, and this expectation is now to be realised, through the matching of Ojswald with Jack Patterson. The contest will take place to-morrow night, at the Opera House, as the principal attraction in a tournament which promises to be full of interest.

Oswald’s opponent, Patterson, has been in Gisborne before, having met Hal Rumberg here a month or so ago. Ho is a mild and very likablo personality outside the ring, but in a contest ho is “dynamite.” Immensely strong, he is as' fit, too, as regular work can make him, and when Patterson goes in for a fall, ho throws all other considerations to the winds. This feature of his wrestling has led to his losing more than ono of his contests, but has not in tho least detracted from his value as a drawing card, and his services are in demand all over the Dominion, the difficulty being to get opponents suitable for him. In Oswald, the Gisborne as- ‘ sedation has secured a mat expert who seonis just the type to bring Patterson out of his shell, and there should be (fireworks when the pair meet to-morrow night. j Amateur preliminaries at-the WalkerPereira tournament were unaccountably slow, though every one of those engaged had .previously given a good account of himself in other matches. For to-mor-row’s tournament, tho preliminaries have been the subject of special thought, .and there should be no reason to complain of lack of action in any ono of them. A good bout is held in reserve by the committee, in case of a hitch in 'connection with any of the scheduled i contests. Advice was received by the Gisborne Wrestling Association this morning to the effect that the New Zealand 1 WrestI ling Union has designated the Patter-son-Oswald match at Gisborne, as one of , the elimination bouts in connection with 1 the championship series, now oommenoj ing. The championship was instituted | in 1931, when Stanley Pinto carried off the honors, and last year George Walker proved the winner after a tussle vlith Harry Mamos which was classed as one ' of the finest ever seen in New Zealand. I Walker and Mamos are likely to be tho major figures in this year’s elimination Series, but the. other wrestlers 'in the country are all keen, a.nil may be 1 expected to make tho most of their opportunities. Amateur wrestlers who are to appear on to-morrow evening’s programme are advised that their passes are available | from Mr. George Clayton, treasurer of the Gisborne association.
