ROADSIDE TREES

GREY' STREET SCHEME APPROVED BY COUNCIL Oho portion of Mr. J. B. Poynter’s town beautification scheme, that dealing with the planting of trees in Grey street, has met with the approval of the Borough Council. Mr. Poyliter’s proposals were considered by the council’s reserves committee, which, in a report to last evening’s meeting of the council, stated that it had been decided to recommend that Grey street from Childers road to the Waikanae Creek bridge should be planted with planes and silver birch trees, and from the bridge to the 'beach with Norfolk Island pines. The committee stated that the engineer would submit an estimate of the cost of the work, including the provision of cradles round the trees.

Regarding the suggestion that trees should be planted along the Haiti Hill road, the report stated that it had been pointed out that this road was under the jurisdiction of the Cook County Council, and before the work could be undertaken it would 1 be necessary to obtain the permission of the County Council. Dealing with the Poverty Bay Horticultural Society’s request in connection with the lopping of trees, the committee stated that whilst it was not in accord with the practice of allowing full grown trees in the streets, it recommended that before any further lopping was undertaken the matter should be considered by. the .reserves committee. When the report was under consideration the engineer, Mr. E. It. Thomas, stated that he estimated the cost of planting Norfolk Island pines in Grey street from Kalmtia street to the beach at £7, based on prices which he had in the office, though Cr. D. S. Thompson had informed him that the trees probably could be purchased more cheaply. There was enough timber in the borough yards for the protective work. The report was adopted. Referring to the council’s decision to lay down a grass strip in Gladstone road to replace the old tram track, Cr. 11. 11. DeOosta said that he considered tlmt the council had been too hasty in deciding upon a 16ft. strip. People to whom lie had spoken considered that a 10ft. sly ip would be ample; as much room as possible for traffic was desirable. Cr. DeCosta gave notice of his intention to move at the next meeting that the previous resolution should be rescinded in order that that amendment. might be made.
