From Australia conies an inquiry as to whether a direct descent of Captain .fames Cook, the famous l navigator,' is residing in New Zealand. The name given is Mrs. Gleneaini. The common belief on the subject is that Captain Cook’s descendants did not survive the first generation.
The opinion that it was better not to have main roads “plastered” with hoardings in the One Tree Hill district, Auckland, was expressed by the Mayor, Mr. I. J. Goldstine, at a meeting of the Borough Council, when an application to erect hoardings about 70ft. in length on .a vacant site in the KTanukau road was being considered. It was stated residential sites were affected by the display of hoardings. The clerk estimated the revenue to the council Irani the erection of the hoardings would li*e about £6 a year. Tt was decided not to grant permission.
