. ! DAMAGE IN HAILSTORM
Damage to property and crops in tho (Jtahuhu district by the phenomenal hailstorm on Sunday is estimated to run into hundreds of pounds. The Panmurc, Mount Wellington and Otahuhii market gardeners, whoso properties were in the track of the storm, suffered extensive loss through outdoor crops of early tomatoes being destroyed. One- gardener stated that only a few tomato flants remained out of a plot of 7000. eas and beans in early stages of growth were broken and flattened by the largehailstones. Loquat and other fruit trees also suffered considerably, tho immature fruit and young buds being ruined. Gardeners with glasshouses in the Otahuhu district suffered extensive loss through breakages in roof glass and destruction of grape vines ana hothouse tomatoes. One glasshouse had only a few whole panes left in 100 ft. of roof. The owner estimated that it would take over £4O to repair this and other damage to his property. Old residents state the size of tho hailstones and the severity of the storm surpassed anything in living memory.
