CHARGES DISMISSED
ALLEGED THEFTS (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, last night. Charges of theft of .property alleged to belong to the Selwyn County Council brought against Edward Butt, forpierly engineer-clerk to the council, were dismissed in the Magistrate’s Court to-day after ,the evidence of three councillors had been heard It was alleged that at the termination of his engagement in April 1933, Butt took away goods valued at £55. The accused pleaded not guilty. The defence, in cross-examination of witnesses, led evidence to show that Butt claimed the articles taken as his own, and had notified the chairman of his intention to take them. Butt made a list for the council of the articles he took.
The magistrate, Mr E. D. Mosley, ■said he was far from satisfied that anything in the nature of theft had been • ommitted. He dismissed the charges and ordered the goods seized to be returned to Butt. x
