GERMAN EXPLANATION RESTRICTIONS PROMISED POWERS NOW SATISFIED (British Official Wireless.) Ree. noon. Ilerr 'Witmnor was told that in view of the assurances given by Germany, the British Government hoped that there would be no repetition of these incidents.

BRITISH PRESS COMMENT

The Times’ Berlin correspondent states that tho tone of the communique replying to the demarche clearly shows, that the Government is indisposed to do anything to ease the tension. Its expressed desire for British goodwill is unlikely to cause any serious modification ,of the Nazi policy towards Austria. The issue of the struggle may be vital in determining whether tho Hitler state will endure. The Nazis’ consider it essential that they should win, despite even stronger foreign, opposition. They have many powerful weapons at their disposal to continue tho struggle, including a 1000 marks tax on Germans entering Austria, exposing* large areas, to economic distress. The Morning Post’s diplomatic correspondent says that though the official German reply is uncompromising it is understood as a fact that Berlin has already intimated that sho is willing to do her best to avoid such incidents in the future. The brusque reply to tho Ambassadors’ Notes was due to the desire of the Hitlerites to imprest .their followers. The News-Chronicle says: "The arrogant reply by the German Government creates a rather serious situation, which is not lessened by the particularly dastardly murder by Nazis on the Austrian frontier.”
