MR. FRED HALL, M.P. (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assri.) LONDON, April 19. Mr. Fred Hail, M.P., “Father" of the Labor Party, died to-day; aged 78 years. The late Mr. Hall was associated with the Labor movement from an early age, and in 1898 held office in tho Yorkshire Miners' Union, and two years later became political agent. In 1905 bo was elected to Parliament for the Nonnunton division of Yorkshire, and sat continuously until, his death. The death is reported of Mr. Edmund J. Sullivan, the well-known artist. Born in London in 1869, the late Mr. Sullivan .studied art under, his father, and at the age of 20 joined the art stall of the Daily Graphic, with which he remained until 1892. He was responsible for tlie illustrations in a number of wellknown works, including “Tom Brown’s Schooldays,” “Walton’s Angler,” “Pilgrim’s Progress,” YVell’s “Modern Utopia,” “Vicar of Wakefield,” and “Qmar Khayyam.” Us is permanently represented in many public galleries, including those at Melbourne. A motion of sympathy with Mr. add Mrs. T. Corson in the death oi their son Leslie was passed by the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon. The deaths of three elderly ladies occurred at Wellington during Easter. They were Mrs. Lilian Howarth, wife of a well-known civil engineer; Mrs. Jessie Fife, 90, widow; and Mrs. 11. Birch, who had been fit) years a resident of Wellington. The death occurred in Hamilton oh Monddy of Mr. John Maurice Flynn at the age of 85 years. Mr. Flynn was born in County Kerry, Ireland, and came to New Zealand in 1853. He lived for many years in Canterbury, where he took up land. He was employed in the railway service for 25 years and was one of the founders of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants. Privations experienced by some of the early pioneers are recalled by the death of Mrs. Georgina Lawrence, who died in* Auckland a few days ago. She was the widow of Mr. F. J. Lawrence, who died in May last at the age of 91 years. Mrs. Lawrence was born in Nelson 87 years ago. When she was only nine months ol age her parents travelled from Nelson to Auckland in a small open cutter owned by her, father. They made a call at Waitsra, but the natives warned them to get away as there were hostile Maoris who intended to capture the little vessel. The family decided to proceed on to Auckland, and when they reached Onehunga Airs. Lawrence’s mother had to lie carried ashore as sho had been sitting with her feet in water for three days. The father of Mrs. Lawrence was Captain Dalton, who in after years commanded the cutter in which Bishop Selwyu voyaged amongst the islands in the Pacific. Mrs. Lawrence remembered the hanging of the first white man in Auckland. Slie went to live in Cambridge in 1.864, where she married Mr. Thomas Beresford, who was drowned a few years later. When her eldest son was only nine days, old the family hail to seek shelter across the river at Cambridge from hostile, natives. Four years later she married Mr. Lawrence, a veteran of wars in Crimea and China, who served with the Third Waikato Regiment, during the Maori war. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence . subsequently kept diningrooms at Te Aroha. goldfield, and for 30 years were fruitgrowing at Henderson.
