SHAKESPEARE AT STRATFORD

SECOND FESTIVAL LONDON, Feb. 16. Tho second Shakespeare festival in the new memorial theatre at Strat-ford-upon-Avon presented several ■features which testified both to tho ambitious policy pursued by the governors and tho director, Mr. W. Bridges, and the increasing-popularity of the productions with the public. This year, instead of two shorter seasons in tho spring and summer, tho theatre will remain open continuously from April 17 to September 9, during which period 10 different plays will be presented, in addition to programmes of orchestral and vocal music on Sundays. During the first six weeks, “Macbeth,” “As You Like It,” "Corlolanus,” “Much Ado About Nothing,” “King Richard the Second,” and “The Merchant of Venice” will be produced in daily rotation, the later plays to lie presented being ‘The Taming of tho Shrew,” “Romeo and Juliet,” '"Hamlet,” and “The Merry Wives of Windsor.”

. Shakespeare’s birthday (April 23) happens, this year, to full on a Sunday, and will, therefore, be celebrated on the following day, when “Coriolanus” will be given as the birthday play in a new production by the director. Incidentally, among the “guest producers” who will visit Stratford in the course of the' season are Komisarjevsky (whb will revive “The Merchant of Venice” and make a new production of "Macbeth”) and Tyrone Guthrie, whose recent production of “Love’s Labour Lost” in London attracted so much attention. The has promised to produce "Richard the Second.”
