SURPRISE VISIT

ELEPHANT IN GARDENS SYDNEY, April 10. When Mr. F. S. Hcigliway, of Ethel ; street, Bumvood, was aroused by tho • persistent and loud harking of his dog, about 0.30 yesterday morning, ho discovered that a big elephant had j taken possession of his back garden. ! There is a gate, but. the elephant had not used it; it had just knocked down the fence. When Mr. Hcigliway. had sufficiently recovered from the shock, ho noticed that the elephant did not display any of the ferocity that is sometimes associated wi*u I beasts of the jungle. It quietly searched about for something to eat, seemingly quite indifferent to the pro- \ sence of the owner. ! The mysterious appearance of tho elephant was explained later on when the announcement was rondo that it had escaped from a travelling circus. Later on if: visited Mr. J.
