The Rev. T. C. Beattie, missionary of the Church of England in Zululand, lias arrived at Auckland from Sydney oil a holiday visit to New Zealand, Mr. E. R. G. Gilchrist. In presenting Air. Gilchrist with a lino mantel clock on behalf of the staff, Mr. E. Warren referred to the esteem in wliich the recipient was held by all with whom he was associated. Advice was received in Gisborne yesterday from Mr. Colin Lowndes, formerly of Gisborne, to the effect, that lie tiad been provisionally selected as u member of the Australian Universities Rugby football team to visit New Zealand 'next month. Mr. Lowndes. was a prominent member of the Gisborne High School first, fifteen some rears ago, and on proceeding to Otago University he continued bis successful football career, seeming his blue in (his sport, as well as gaining representative honors in various other branches of athletic effort. After taking his degree at Otago, lie joined an insurance company in Australia, being appointed lo the Melbourne office, and while there lie continued his post-gin dilate work at the Melbourne University. He has r. presented that university in Rugby lootball with much success, and despite his light, build, has always shown ' a remarkable capacity for the game. The Australian Universities’ team will play its first match in New Zealand at Auckland. on May 17.
