burton cup final A REPLAY NECESSARY MARTIN AND MacGIBBON DRAW Martin and Mac Gibbon finished up with 21-all in the Burton Cup final yesterday afternoon, and a replay is necessary. This lias been fixed for next Saturday on the Giskorno green. The game was a notable finish to the Poverty Bay Howling Centre’s Easter tournament, and excitement ran high among the large crowd of spectators on the Gisborne Bowling Club’s green, where the final was played, the latter stages of the match particularly being full of interest and bowling thrills. As reported in yesterday’s third edition, Mac Gibbon ("Poverty Bay) opened up in spectacular fashion, and had put on nine in the first four heads, in which Martin (Kahutia) failed to score. At tho sixth head, the score board showed 10-1. Martin, however, won the next four heads, including a live on the tenth, a,nd was two ahead. From then on, the scoring was very even, first one and then the other gaining the lead. They were 12-all on the eleventh head, 16-nll on the sixteenth, and 21-all on the twenty-first and final bead. Martin was four down on the nineteenth, but he played tactfully on the last two heads, on which he scored two apiece to come out with a draw. The rinks were:— Poverty Bay. —W. Han key, J- Ilaukey, J. Hartley, W. J. Mac Gibbon (s). Kahutia.—B. L. Power, A. Sawyer, j. Newton, J. J. Martin (s). MARTIN’S LEAD At tho afternoon interval, after the playing of the twelfth head, the score stood Kahutia 14, Poverty Bay 12. MacGibbon regained the lead on tho thirteenth head, however; Newton drew well, after there was nothing near, Hartley just missing with his second, and Mac Gibbon removed the shot with his last, scoring three. Flaying on the fourteenth, W. Hankey drew a nice shot, and a splendid effort by Sawyer just missed dragging kitty; Hartley drew another, and Newton missed with two drives, but with a running shot, Martin removed one, leaving Poverty Bay 111, Kahutia. 14. On the fifteenth, W. Hankey played well, and lay two, while J. Hankey drew another, hut Sawyer came to the rescue by drawing the shot which remained, making the tally Poverty Bay IC, Kahutia 15. A perfect shot was drawn on kitty by W. Hankey on tho sixteenth, and Sawyer just missed removing tho jack; J. Hankey drew another, Hartley playing position, hut Martin dragged the kitty to lie one, leaving the scores 16-all. .T. Hankey played well on the seventeenth head, and drew two for his side, Hartley adding another, but Newton drove and removed all the scoring bowls; Hartley, however, drew the shot with his larft, and Mac Gibbon added another. THE LAST FOUR' HEADS. Interest began to quicken on the eighteenth head, on which W. Hankey led well, and drew close, with J. Hankey improving the position, until his sido lay four; Newton drove, and took out one, drew the second shot with his next, and Martin later turned one of his bowls into shot, making tho board read Poverty Bay 18, Kahutia 17. Poverty Bay’s lead was increased to four on the nineteenth head. The leads and two’s went narrow, and, until Hartley drew to the kitty, there was nothing close. Although Mac Gibbon lay three, he drew another himself, and Martin just missed resting the shot bowl. MacGibbon with his last shifted kitty, and this reduced his score to three, making

the tallies Poverty Bay 21, Kahutia 17. With five to get for a win on the last two heads, Kahutia played at the top of their form. Power drew a nice one, but W. Hankey went one better. There was no change until Hartley drew another. Sawyer and Newton both attempted to alter the head, but without success. Martin, however, drove kitty into the ditch, and lay one. MaoGibbon failed to draw, and Martin drew with his last bowl, scoring two, leaving the scores Poverty Bay 21, Kahutia 19. After the leads bad played on the final head, it was a measure, but Sawyer put it beyond doubt, and with his second he got a rub for another. Hartley turned a bowl in for second shot, and carried the jack, and Martin lay three. MaeCibbon saved one, and Martin lay two, sufficient for a tie. The position remained unaltered at the close, and 21-all was chalked up.
